Rock climbing is increasingly appearing in Hollywood’s blockbuster movies, the latest example being a rather bogus climbing scene (gloves and all) in the, otherwise excellent, latest installment of Mission: Impossible, starring Tom Cruise.
Enough with Hollywood climbing…on to REAL climbing and the real life of one of the world’s best climbers! Coming to theaters in late September is Free Solo, the story of Alex Honnold and his dream to free solo the 3,000 foot El Capitan. As someone who’s climbed El Cap, I have always found the idea of free soloing this dizzyingly high wall as unimaginable…and impossible. Visionaries, however, don’t see “impossible” as a black and white thing, but rather something that’s negotiable—and perhaps achievable—given a deep enough dedication, focus, and belief.
