Learn why you should have two different pairs of climbing shoes with you each time you go to the gym, boulders, or crags.
No piece of climbing gear has a greater influence on your performance than the shoes you wear. After all, in most climbing situations, the feet make up half of your contact with the rock.
I recommend that every climber have at least two pairs of shoes in their rucksack at all times. Many pros will have 3 or 4 different pairs of shoes to best match the demands of any given climb. But for the average climber, I recommend you have two pairs of shoes – one sized for comfort and the other sized for performance.
Obviously, there are many different brands of climbing shoes and several different styles of construction, support, and closure systems – we’re going to table a discussion of these topics for another day.
Today, I just want to talk about the value of carrying two pairs of shoes with you on every gym visit and outdoor climbing venture. One pair should be selected and sized for comfort — and the other selected and sized for performance.
